Trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and worked  as an actor in regional repertory at Manchester, Harrogate and Liverpool Everyman. He appeared in London at the Mermaid Theatre, the Aldwych and the Roundhouse. From 1968-70 was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1975 he joined the English by Radio repertory company and developed a successful career as a voice over artist. Appeared extensively on television and film, most notably in Thames TV’s Special Branch and as Matthew in Franco Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth.

His directing career begain in 1973 when he was appointed Associate Director at the Harrogate Theatre.

At  the Orange Tree Richmond, directed  plays by Barker, Brenton, Jeremy Paul and David Cregan.
At the Soho Poly Theatre, directed 4 world premiers of plays by Barrie Keeffe: Gem, My Girl, Abide With Me and Gimme Shelter.
Gimme shelter transferred to the Royal Court, London. Also at the Court, directed Reggae Britannia by Leigh Jackson and An Empty Desk by Alan Drury.
For Nottingham Playhouse, directed Forever Young by Shane Connaughton and Gloo Joo by Michael Hastings. at the Young Vic, London

 
At the Central School of Speech and Drama tutored Teacher Course students in direction and directed final year Stage Course students in productions of French Without Tears , City Sugar and Saliva Milkshake, ( joint project with students from the Central School of Art and Design.)

 In 1979  directed a community arts project in Jamestown, New York, USA, the centerpiece of which was a production of Brecht’s Schweyk in the Second World War. The play was performed by group of 7 British actors and 100 Jamestown amateurs.

 In 1981 studied on the BBC Trainee Directors’ Course and this led to a career primarily working in television drama.

In 1982, he was one of the first directors of the Channel 4 soap Brookside and subsequently directed productions for ITV and the BBC, amongst which were episodes of The Collectors, Rockliffe’s Babies, Howards Way, Minder, Badger, Robin Hood, Palmer, Stay Lucky, The Bill, The Last Salute, Tracy Beaker.

He has taught television acting technique courses at  LAMDA, Central School of speech and Drama, The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and for BBC Wales.

 In 2003 worked with Tom Green on his film Roadmovie and on Aisha Khan’s Paper Flowers, both TAPS workshops.

 In 2004, he commissioned and directed Tom Green’s play Katherine for the Bay Festival in Antigua, West Indies.

 In 2005 directed Katherine at the Finborough Theatre, London and A State of Grace by Alan Drury at the Soho Theatre.

 2006: Visiting tutor at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Ran an ‘Introduction to Acting for the Screen’ course for second year students, during which the students made 2X10 minute short films.

 2006: appointed performance reviewer for the National Council for Drama Training

 2006: performed and directed Tom Green’s play ‘Antigua’ at the Tabard Theatre, London.

 2007: location director for ITV series ‘The Candidate.’

 Worked with writer Debbie Owen developing 'Barkin', a six part series for Granada TV. 

In 2007/8  worked as a hospitality consultant for the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Is currently writing a biography of Gianna Guzzeloni Thompson and making a video record of David Tremayne’s attempt to beat the British land speed record.
